[Android] Things to check when Gmail/Google Chat notifications do not fly | TeraDas Home last update Hatena Twitter Facebook Pocket YouTube Twitter Facebook RSS

Notifications do not fly in Android version Gmail or Google Chat (Gmail chat)! Here is a summary of what you should check.

Actually, for about a year now, I've been having trouble getting notifications from Gmail on my main smartphone.

So, I will introduce the general settings in order.

1. Stop "Adjust Notifications"

The first setting you should check is Android's "Battery Optimization".

"Battery optimization" is a function that improves battery life by limiting the mobile network and data synchronization of apps during sleep. However, it has the side effect of delaying notification as a demerit.

How to stop "Battery optimization" is summarized in the next article.

Symptoms of notification delays can often be improved just by checking this setting.

2. Stop "Auto-adjust Notifications" and "Extended Notifications"

On Android 10 and later, "Auto-adjust Notifications" and "Extended Notifications" also cause notifications to be delayed or silent.

The following article summarizes how to turn off "automatic adjustment of notifications" and "extended notifications".

If Gmail notifications are still delayed even after checking the above two points, please check the following settings.

3. Check your Gmail notification settings

Next, let's check your Gmail notification settings.

Go to "Settings" → "General Settings" → "Manage Notifications" in the Gmail app.

Make sure notifications are turned on for the Gmail app. (*This screen is not in the Gmail app, but jumps to the setting screen on the Android side.)

Make sure notifications are turned on for each account as well as for the entire Gmail app.

If you have accidentally blocked a notification by long-pressing it in the past, notifications for the entire Gmail app may be turned off. This is confirmation of that.

In addition to the Gmail app, you can also open this setting screen from Android's "Settings" → "Apps".

4. Check the notification settings on the Gmail app side

Next, Gmail app "Settings" → "~@gmail.com" (settings for each account. It may be other than gmail.com domain) → " Set "Notifications" to "All".

Also, check "Manage Labels". Let's turn on "Label notifications" for the labels you want to receive notifications for.

If "Label Notification" is not checked, you will not be notified of mails classified into categories such as "Social", "Promotion", and "New Arrivals" other than inbox.

Also, if necessary, check "Notify me for each new mail". In that case, you will be notified each time you receive an email, not just a notification for each label.

If that doesn't work, initialize the Gmail app

If you still can't get notifications after checking up to this point, you may be able to solve the problem by resetting the Gmail app.

The initialization method of the Gmail app is the same as general apps.

In addition, after initialization, you need to review the notification settings of the Gmail app.

Because the settings can be reconfirmed from a clean state, it should also be a countermeasure against oversights.
