Audi puts 5G on-board, speeds up Wi-Fi and infotainment ... collaborates with Verizon
Audi announced on February 22 that it has agreed with Verizon to introduce 5G communications to the United States. The partnership between the two companies will enable ultra-wideband 5G connectivity and build a communication architecture with personalized mobile services, new advanced driver assistance systems and the speed and capacity needed for autonomous driving.
Audi cars will connect to Verizon's ultra-wideband 5G network. One of the benefits is ultra-high-speed in-vehicle Wi-Fi and infotainment. More than ever, occupants will be able to download and stream high-speed, high-quality entertainment in the car.
Audi vehicles will also be able to receive firmware and software upgrades wirelessly, much like smartphones. This will keep in-vehicle technology up-to-date and functional.
Audi and Verizon will also accelerate the joint development of "Cellular C-V2X" technology. This technology allows vehicles to communicate with other vehicles and surrounding infrastructure to exchange warnings and messages about hazards. This technology is indispensable for the development and safety improvement of self-driving cars beyond the range that drivers, in-vehicle cameras, and radar systems can monitor.
